But with newfound confidence and the killer instinct to do it, I took the plunge, and went on to not just participate, but also win the Mrs Radiance title”, beams Poonam, a fashion designer by profession and mother to 5 year old Vedika.

It doesn’t matter how beautiful or intelligent you are. What matters is how good a human being you are : Pune’s Shining Star Sunita Kulkarni crowned at

Mrs West India 2020

·      Crowned 2nd Runner Up

·      Also bagged sub-title Mrs Shining Star

·  Despite a childhood disease of Rheumatoid Arthritis, Sunita Kulkarni has come a long way receiving accolades and awards

When Sunita Kulkarni was crowned 2ndRunner Up Mrs West India 2020 and also won the Mrs Shining Star sub-title – both in the Gold Category, by DIVA Pageants, her joy knew no bounds. And rightly so as the stunning beauty had overcome a long-drawn battle with Rheumatoid Arthritis, an auto immune disease for 14 years, which even rendered her bed-ridden for 3 years at the most crucial years of her life, when she was pursuing her CA.  And a decade after having cured herself completely, through a proper study in Health & Nutrition, she plunged to participate in the prestigious pageant Mrs West India 2020 – Empress of West India 2020 – Season 3, which was held at held at the Alila Diwa Goa, on 28th Nov 2020, and vowed the jury, thus rightly being crownedMrs Shining Star.

Born and brought up in Ranchi, Jharkhand, Sunita spent her childhood with very minimal resources. Her parents could only afford basic food, shelter and clothes, but invested in imparting to her good education with whatever savings they had.

But life wasn’t easy for her. “At a very young age of 15 years I was detected with an Auto Immune disease called Rheumatoid Arthritis. I was a very brilliant student and excelled in all extra-curricular activities like singing, painting, dancing, speech, etc. in school as well. I topped in my school in 10th, overlooking my illness ”, reminisces Sunita.

After 12th board exams she pursued Chartered Accountancy and ranked

7th at the All India CA Foundation. That’s not all – she also received the All India Best Lady Candidate Award in year 2001.

However, in year 2002 she became severely ill during her CA Intermediate studies. But despite all odds, she appeared for her exams and got All India 48th Rank in CA Intermediate. The disease then took its toll and she was bedridden from 2002 to 2005. Yet she sat for her CA final exams and passed at 1st attempt.

“Fortunes took a favourable turn from September 2005. I went to Bangalore for my first job in Infosys. There I met my husband, Atul Kulkarni, also a CA, working in the same company with me. Atul knew from day one that I am an RA patient, and can’t walk properly, but he became a very good friend of mine and in just three months of our courtship he proposed to me”, smiles Sunita. They got married in December 2006, and subsequently moved to Pune.

She quit her job, after the birth of her son Arjun in October 2008. As she couldn’t think of leaving him at daycare at such a young age, and instead  started her CA practice. During that time she got introduced with the concept of Nutrition and Diet. “I pursued and successfully completed a course of Nutrition advisor from NHI California. This learning helped me  recover from my 14 years old disease of Rheumatoid Arthritis in just 2 years. And since the last 12 years I am helping thousands of families to stay healthy all over the world”, she smiles. Today Sunita is an entrepreneur working in Health n Wellness and is also a Mentor and a Life Coach. In fact, she was recently awarded with Women’s Excellence Achiever’s Award in the field of Nutrition and Health.

She credits her success to the unfailing support of her husband and undoubtedly her loving inlaws, and of course her parents too. “But my journey would not have been possible, had I not met Anjana mam and Karl sir, founders of DIVA Pageants, who literally groomed me to perfection”, she expresses in awe.

What’s more – in 2016, she reignited her passion of singing and even joined a band, and made a few music videos also. And the lady with the golden heart also participates in lot of charitable activities for various NGOs, Robin Hood Army being a priority.

“I believe that it doesn’t matter how beautiful or intelligent you are. What matters is how good a human being you are. And this is what I teach Arjun – it’s ok if you don’t become a very successful doctor, engineer, CA, actor, singer or scientist, but you have to become a good human being, that’s the most important thing in life”, she sums up.

Book Launch Mr Krishna Prakash Commissioner of Police PCMC.

The book ‘1952 Cha Singham’, which tells the story of the sincere and aggressive work of retired police officer Shri. Shyamlal Bamb (age 93), is being published on 5th December 2020, under the auspices of Shri Krishna Prakash, Commissioner of Police, Pimpri Chinchwad. Well known poet and astrologer Smt. Pratibhatai Shahu Modak, Mr. Rajendra Dahale – DIG Police Wireless – Pune, and well-known commentator and writer Manjiri Dhamankar will be present as honorary guests.

In this book, his grandson Shri Shrenik Kankaria has proudly described the duty of Shri Shamlalji Bamb, who vowed to give relief to the people by punishing the criminals without succumbing to any pressure. Mrs. Manjiri Dhamankar has beautifully worded this book.

A real Singham. A police officer who abides by all the rules and supports the common man and imprisons the goons. In movies, the jeep takes a few drifts, the cop throws the goons into the air (defying all the rules of physics) and we applaud, but we were amazed to hear this Singham who worked so hard in 1952 and still recounts his memories with such enthusiasm today and the way his grandson has penned those memories in book form is really readable for today’s generation. At that time and era, in a backward town like Jalna, a member of a Jain family joined the police department. It was difficult to digest for the Jain community which finds peace in the traditional groceries and textiles businesses, but Shyamlal Bamb’s desire to do something different led him to enter this new field and retire after a long and successful career.

When you believe in yourself you become unstoppable : Pune’s Vibhuti Pandey, Winner, Mrs West India 2020

When Pune’s Vibhuti Pandey won the coveted title of ‘Mrs West India 2020 – Silver category’, her joy knew no bounds and her mantra ‘when you believe in yourself you become unstoppable’, was indeed validated. Through sheer hardwork and dedication she walked away with the prestigious crown from amongst 47 finalists at the glittering finale of ‘Mrs West India – Empress of West India 2020’ – Season 3,held at the Alila Diwa Goa, on 28th Nov 2020. That’s not all – her confident persona also helped her bag the subtitle of ‘Mrs Confident – Silver Category’  at the same platform!

“My journey to the pageant began when I determined to transform myself from an overweight person to becoming my fittest best, and I succeeded in losing 25kgs in a little over a year”, smiles the finance manager from Deutshe Bank, Pune. “After this transition in my life I decided to give pageantry a try. And my search led me to the best in the industry, Diva Pageants, managed and organised by Anjana and Karl Mascarenhas. Going through the very fruitful and life transforming grooming sessions imparted by them, I became an even better version of myself, and I will always be grateful to them”.

Hailing from a small town Gondia in Vidarbha region of Maharashtra, daughter of Dr Dilip and Sandhya Pandey, she has been brought up with family values of gender equality, fulfilling all the aspirations a woman can dream of and has been instilled a never to give up attitude. After pursuing her MBA in Finance from Hyderabad she now has a successful career as a finance manager at Deutsche Bank, Pune.

“But of course winning the crown wouldn’t have been possible without the unstinted support of my husband, Amit, who works at an MNC as Engineering Director, and my biggest motivator, my 11 year old son Vedant”, beams Vibhuti. She finds a friend in her younger sister Vidhi and brother-in-law Abhishek and wants her niece Archisha to carry her legacy forward.

An avid solo traveller, Vibhuti loves to explore new places, cuisines and cultures, and after having already covered half the globe, she wishes to put her travelling shoes on again for travelling to the other half of the globe.

Looking forward, she wants to inspire other women to give wings to their dreams and shout out to participate in other titles organised by DIVA Pageants. As she believes that while women don a lot of hats in life, it’s very important to maintain an individual identity too. “If you keep following  the footprints of others, when would you leave yours”, believes Vibhuti. In fact, after the success of this pageant, Vibhuti has already started to groom herself to participate at an international pageant in 2021, through Diva Pageants where she will be representing India!

Her family is already very socially responsible and visit old age homes and orphanages regularly. But Vibhuti wants to take this a step further –  by combining the old age home and orphanage, with a thought that senior citizens would get the joy of playing with grandchildren, and orphan kids would get much deserving love from grandparents! Indeed a noble thought!

Child Of My Heart: A comprehensive Guide to Adoption in India

·      One stop platform to address all adoption related queries

·      Resource book for prospective parents/budding jo urnalists and social workers

: On the occasion of World Adoption Day that is celebrated every year on November 9, Pune-based journalist and adoptive parent Kalyani Sardesai is happy to announce the launch of her book Child Of My Heart: A comprehensive Guide to Adoption in India.

Published by Litreasure Publishers, the book is slated to be a one stop guide for all questions pertaining to adoption.

“Having been through the process under the current centralized system of adoption , there were a lot of questions I had along the way,” says Sardesai. “Sure, there was information available online, the availability of adoption support groups as well as hand-holding from my mentoring child care institution, but as a reporter, I thought it would be a good idea to simplify and collate the relevant information in a book with a focus on Indian references. This is because while some aspects are universal to adoption, others are specific to us.”

“Given that unlike other parents, you don’t have nine months on hand to prepare, it certainly helps to have some notion of what to expect when you’re adopting,” says Chetaan Joshii, CEO, Litreasure Publishers.

Adoption in India currently happens only under the aegis of the Centralized Adoption Resource Authority, a statutory body of the Ministry of Women and Child Development under the Government of India. Established under the Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children) Act, 2015, CARA is responsible for monitoring and regulating adoptions both within and outside India.  This has both, pros and cons as the current system seems to have brought down the number of adoptions, whilst simultaneously bringing in objectivity and transparency to the process. “For parents, this has assorted repercussions. Hence, the book,” says Joshii.

Contents of the book

From the paperwork and technicalities, to the rationale behind the centralized adoption process, to the questions that are seemingly unique to adoptive homes, this book hopes to go the distance in bringing greater clarity to one’s understanding of the phenomenon of adoption. Also, keeping in mind that adoption is a lifelong process, that the journey of a family and child only begins at the end of a tedious and seemingly endless wait, there is a detailed section dedicated to the voices of adoptive parents and adoptees, featuring in depth interviews with various individuals and parents. One section looks at adoption as depicted in popular culture and folklore, as this definitely influences our understanding of the process and the outcome. Another section is devoted to the writings of several activists and child care experts. These ought to help in understanding one’s child better at different stages of the parent-child journey. That said, the book goes beyond the purview of both Prospective Adoptive Parents (PAPS) and adoptees to examine Indian society and its myriad contradictions. Our prejudices reveal as much about us as our strengths. To that extent, it hopes to be a resource book for budding social workers, lawyers and journalists and help them form an understanding of why things work the way they do. Especially given the fact that while there are millions of abandoned children in India, not every child is legally free for adoption.

Unlike earlier times, the JJ Act does not leave much room for parents’ personal preferences in terms of either looks or background; there is no endless parading of children waiting to get chosen. However, the stringent requirements of the process means only a limited number of adoptions can take place every year.

However, the question then arises: Where does that leave the rest of India’s vulnerable/abandoned and orphaned children? Paradoxically though, it is just as imperative to look at the grotesque reality that ‘manufactures’ orphans to put them up for adoption.

Amongst other objectives, it analyzes the Indian outlook towards adopted parents and children, even as it seeks to demystify the seemingly gargantuan and long-drawn process, explain the scenario against which it works, and hopefully, dispel a few inaccurate notions about adoption.

“On a personal level, this work is the logical culmination of my journey so far: as a journalist who has written on child rights, and as a thoroughly fulfilled adoptive parent, whose pride in her beautiful child is second to none,” rounds off Sardesai.

Priced at Rs.499/-, the book is available on Amazon and Book Ganga.

All the proceeds from the book will go to a childcare institution.

A surprise wedding gift made the bride’s day unforgettable…

·      Masala King Dr. Dhananjay Datar gifts Rs. 1 lakh to a Kozhikode Air India Express flight crash victim’s daughter

Anusree, the daughter of Cherikka Parambil Rajeevan from Kerala, lost her father in the Air India Express crash, at Kozikode airport in August 2020. Rajeevan, who worked for 20 years as a spray painter at a car workshop in Dubai, was returning home to make preparations for Anusree’s wedding ceremony. Alas! The accident took his life along with 19 other co-passengers. Grief-striken Anusree and other family members ached for his presence at the wedding. But a surprise wedding gift made the bride’s day memorable. The kind hearted giver was none other than Masala King Dr. Dhananjay Datar who gifted her with Rs. 1 lakh on the occasion. The Rajeevan family not only tearfully thanked Dr. Datar, but also expressed their heartfelt gratitude for this noble work.

Dr. Datar, CMD, Al Adil Trading LLC, UAE, had proactively announced a total of Rs. 2 million as financial aid from his personal fund to the families of those who died in the mishap. As promised he transferred the amount to the families. All the families of victims came together and formed a WhatsApp group named after Karippur (the location of the Kozikode airport) and conducted their first full-fledged Zoom meeting. The group invited Dr. Datar to thank him. During the meeting, Nishi, the wife of late Rajeevan, broke into tears and told Datar that the aid was really a timely help for Anusree’s wedding which was postponed due to the death of her father. Rajeevan had participated zealously in the engagement ceremony and the family missed him tremendously.

Dr. Datar, after learning this, announced an extra Rs. 1 lakh as a wedding gift to Anusree and immediately transferred the amount. The family bought extra gold ornaments for Anusree and also did some maintenance work at the house. The wedding took place recently in a simple manner amidst the presence of selected 40 relatives while abiding by the pandemic regulations.

Commenting on this, Dr. Datar humbly said, “I have done nothing great. It was a small effort on my part to relieve the families of crash victims from their financial burden. It is an outcome of the tutelage of my late parents that inspires me to contribute to social service and welfare. We have been helping the jobless and penniless Indian workers stranded in the GCC region due to the pandemic. We are providing financial assistance to evacuate them safely. I am happy that we could unite more than 5000 such workers with their family.”

India is gearing up to be a $5 trillion economy by 2025, and looks to invest in Africa. More than digital pathways, India’s association with Africa has been about the human touch, which is wonderful to see in this time and place,” he said.

With an increasing number of elderly population and the burden of non-communicable diseases like Diabetes and Hypertension, the burden of stroke is likely to increase in future. Brain stroke can be either ischemic (blood clot) or hemorrhagic. The acronym ‘FAST’ stands for Face, Arm, Speech and Time. Identification of any new onset Asymmetry of FaceWeakness of any Arm&Abnormal Speechby the patient or their relatives and Promptness in reaching hospital (Time) needs to be followed for better outcome in stroke patients. Poison 2 premiered on Zee5 on Friday and has received a thumping response. Most of the reviews are all praises for the star cast, the direction and the storyline which is full of twists and turns like an Abbas Mustan thriller. Netizens have given their verdict that the current season has an extra ‘tadka’ of action, deceit and vengeance compared to the first season. Asmita Sood, Raai Laxmi, Aftab Shivdasani and Zain Imam’s acting are lauded the most. Vishal Pandya’s direction has also got a lot of accolades.
Speaking on the same, a delighted Asmita said “My phone is abuzz with calls and messages since the season premiered on Friday. Netizens are quite impressed with Poison 2. Most of them have talked about the twists and turns in the gut-wrenching series that makes it interesting to watch. I was attracted to the storyline at the time of signing the show and knew we had a winner in the script.  The character I essayed had a strong and an interesting plot who is supporting the main protagonist i.e. Aftab Shivdasani to achieve all his plans. Vishal Pandya is a master director of this genre and knows what he wants making our job a relatively easier one. All the hard work of the entire cast and crew has borne fruit.”
Poison 2 is a racy crime thriller of vengeance and revenge, which picks up the threads from where the first season ended.  As the story in the season unfolds, the characters are left in a poison of revenge and the thin line between right and wrong blurs. The series has got a rating of 7.3/10 on IMDB. “Poison 2 is fully reloaded version of the first season and has all the ingredients of a good crime and action thriller. There is tension, mystery, drama, danger and lust – all neatly packed into 11 intense episodes. As the plot unfolds, episode by episode, the hidden agendas of each of the characters are revealed leaving the viewers even more intrigued than before. The characters have multiple layers to their personalities as they are driven into revenge by circumstances. A paced plot that keeps you intrigued all the way through, right from the first episode. As you go deeper into the story, one episode just rolls over into another and the whole series makes for a great binge-watch. With the multiple layers to their personalities, every character plays according to the circumstances. The whole series is neatly packed into tension, mystery, drama, danger and lust. Therefore, if you are a fan of crime thrillers, book yourself for viewing of Poison 2 as soon as possible” said Asmita as she signed off.

Back in October for Mr. Bachchan’s diwali party, I wore a saree for the first time at a public event and the response was, lets just say, good (blushing!) 😊 I think people who thought of me as someone who only dressed casual or sporty changed their minds. Even I did. I always had a mental block that sarees were only for moms or brides. I was wrong! Now I am so happy to convert my new found love for sarees into a professional association. Wanted to partner with someone who shared my thought of making sarees exciting for each and every girl and woman out there!!! Happy to announce that I’m the brand ambassador of @julahaasarees and an active supporter of their cool initiative #MySareeMyWay that encourages women to express themselves through their drapes.
Their exquisite range of floral sarees and my personal favourites are now available on their website for you to style your way. ADD THEM TO YOUR CLOSET GIRLS!

Relief to Anand Nagar Slum by Sadhu Vaswani Mission during this corona pandemic.

  • Sadhu Vaswani Mission undertakes a massive relief effort distributes 2100 ration kits in Anand Nagar, PimpriChinchwad Municipal Corporation biggest slum
  • 50 volunteers engaged in procurement, packaging and distribution
  • Additional Commissioner of PCMC, Ajit Pawar joins survey, planning and field inspection
  • Additional Commissioner of Police, PCMC IPS Ramnath Pokle lauds efforts
  • Mission will serve adjoining slum areas also including Ram Nagar settlement

Sadhu Vaswani Mission Pune commenced a two day seva of distribution of ration kits in the COVID hotspot, Anand Nagar slums; largest slum in Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) area.

“We heard of the mounting need growing in the Anand Nagar slums, a COVID hotspot where the enforcement of a strict and severe lockdown was adding to the slum-dwellers woes. They couldn’t get to their jobs nor could they procure groceries for themselves. The moment we came to know that the dwellers were running out of food essentials, we got in touch with the authorities,” said an official of the Mission.

“We were then put in touch with the Additional Municipal Commissioner PCMC Ajit Pawar and he joined in the survey, and planning efforts. A detailed list of persons in every household was collected, the number of houses counted and a list prepared. Once we received the list that stated 2100 households, we began with the procurement and packaging,” he added.

The packaging, loading and distribution involved 2 days of efforts with a ration kit that included 5kg rice, 5 kg wheat flour, 2 kg dal, 1 kg pulse, 1 kg sugar, 1 kg poha, 1 ltr oil & 250 gms tea powder. Volunteers relentlessly carried out the seva to meet the demands as early as possible. The distribution began once protocols were met.

Before beginning the distribution, every household was provided with a coupon that they were required to present at the time of collection. Real-time software was also set up by the commissioner where the identity of every recipient was confirmed against the coupon provided. The slums have been divided into three zones where the distribution was carried out.

A medical team was also set up to monitor anyone who showed symptoms to avoid contact and make sure all protocols are followed. We received all support from the Police Department and Local Corporation to ensure smooth distribution.

Additional Commissioner of Police, PCMC IPS Ramnath Pokle said, “The Mission has executed an excellent timely work in the supply of rations to the needy and poor of the Anand Nagar slums.” Additional Commissioner PCMC Ajit Pawar appreciated the efforts.

50 volunteers have been engaged in the massive effort to meet the needs of 2,100 households. The Mission is now continuing to reach out to micro-contained areas in PCMC in coordination with the authorities.

Sadhu Vaswani Mission starts new seva in Pimpri during Corona Pandemic

A plateful, a plentiful!
Fresh, Hot Meals Served at Pimpri!

*Sadhu Vaswani Mission eyes a need and increases it’s seva effort to fulfill it

* 500+ daily meals to Indryani Nagar slums, Pimpri

*The Mission also distributed Tarpaulin sheets (waterproof material) to 25 hutments families, as heavy rains damaged their current roofs.

*Serving even in heavy rains during the cyclone period of 3rd and 4th June with our #CoronaWarriors, the volunteers
Sadhu Vaswani Mission, in collaboration with Attukal Devi Trust and Sabarimala Ayyappa Seva Samajam, has undertaken to serve dinner to nearly 500 slum-dwellers at Indryani Nagar, Pimpri.

This is in addition to the regular sevas the Mission is conducting during the corona pandemic including ration kits and hot meals to shelters.

“The Trust members reached out to us and told us of the need for dinners that has arisen in the slums at Indrayani Nagar, Pimpri. Although we agreed immediately, the logistics of delivering food daily from Pune to Pimpri seemed difficult given the idea that the Mission wishes to serve hot-meals.

We therefore came up with a suggestion of setting up a kitchen at the temple,” said an official of the Mission.

“The Trust agreed immediately and volunteered to cook meals daily. About 10 volunteers from the Trust are engaged in the cooking.

We provided them with all cooking essentials; dals, pulses, rice, vegetables, and spices and condiments.

On the first day, dal rice was prepared. For the following days, the Trust being South Indian plans to cook varieties of rice and bring to the slum-dwellers plates delicacies from the South,” continued the official.

The packing and distribution of the meals is carried out by 5 volunteers of the Mission with help from the temple volunteers.

Food was also served to the homeless on the streets in that area. 500+ meals on average are being served daily.

The heavy rains and cyclonic weather of 3rd and 4th June did not deter the volunteers.* Remarked a female volunteer, “It feels awesome. Due to heavy rains, the slum dwellers could not cook food. They were all waiting for our food to come. They were telling us that we are God for them (Aap Bhagwan ho)*.”

Rain or shine, the seva arrangement initially for a week, will continue until the need remains.

EID MUBARAK – Sadhu Vaswani Mission serves to 1050 needy Muslim families on May 24, 2020

, as the crescent moon appeared in the peaceful night sky and spread its silvery, cool moonlight and announced the auspicious festival of our Muslim brethren — Eid-Ul-Fitr, millions of hearts joined in a prayer.

Joining in the festivities was Sadhu Vaswani Mission.

Volunteers at the Mission headed out with love to make the evening special for over 1050 Muslim families. Dates, bananas and rose milk were distributed with a warm ‘Eid Mubarak’ on their lips.

“The police officials informed us of 930 needy Muslim families at Tadiwala Road who were looking at a bleak Eid. But God willed otherwise; He wanted to make it special, He wanted to make them feel loved,” said an official. “We started the packaging immediately. To make it significant and customised, we included 1ltr bottle of Rooh Afza Sherbat, 1ltr milk, sevaiya, sugar, dates and 6 bananas in each plus an addition of 3kg rice, 1 kg dal and 1ltr cooking oil,” he added.

“The distribution was completed in 3 hours. Starting at 5:00 pm we were done by 8:00 pm. Also the area being a containment zone, our vehicles stood at the entrance while the lane in-charges under the supervision of police authorities collected the items from us.

50 volunteers were engaged in the seva and about 7 vehicles handled the logistics. Although we had a list of 930 families, we ended up distributing kits to 1050 families” he added.

“Their joy knew no bounds! They were thrilled and overwhelmed at the gesture,” said a volunteer.

“In pandemic times, this festival brings in a ray of hope; it spread the much-needed positivity. We were all smiles!” remarked another volunteer.

When times demand social distancing, hearts were closer than ever before!

Religion, let us talk of it less and practice more

Punyadham Ashram’s Humanitarian Service During Corona Pandemic

Pune-based Punyadham Ashram believes “Giving hands are better than praying hands!” and has always put it into practice.

As a small effort to the fight against the Corona pandemic, every little contribution makes a difference. From the beginning of the pandemic a number of goodwill activities have been conducted by the ashram.

Cloth handmade 3 ply masks with the specifications of WHO are being stitched by local women’s self-help groups, whereby Ashram provides them with the best quality cotton fabric.

They are very happy to earn a respectable livelihood and be gainfully occupied during the lockdown.

“To date more than 44,000 masks have been gifted to various Govt. & Army Hospitals – Sassoon Hospital, Pune Cantonment Hospital, Poona Hospital, Kashibai Navale Hospital, Desai Eye Hospital, AFMC, Police personnel, Leprosy Home, Sadhu Vaswani Mission, Mukul Madhav Foundation and other NGOs. 500 PPE suits and 500 KN 95 masks have also been purchased for distribution to hospitals”, says Maa Krishna Kashyap, Chairperson.

Thousands are dying of hunger and Maa Krishna feels that ‘For the hungry… Food is God!’

In the beginning more than 100 families in and around the vicinity of Kondhwa-Pisoli were gifted ration kits.

Now more rations have been procured for distribution as kits for another1000+ families to sustain them for a month.

The local Police personnel are extremely helpful in locating the most affected families and distribution of ration kits.

The condition of migrant workers is also pathetic and they are all travelling with hungry stomachs.

To relieve their suffering to some extent Maa decided to provide wholesome ‘ready-to-eat’ meal packets plus a mask to each of them.

“The distribution of these packets to reach the needy and famished migrant workers who were fortunate to travel by train, was possible only because of the selfless help from the Police Dept.”, adds Maa.

All this humanitarian service has been possible under Maa’s able guidance and unending motivation with the hard work and dedicated efforts of Punyadham residents and the staff.

“We are also extremely grateful to the valuable contribution of our well-wishers from far and wide who come forward with their unconditional support towards these noble social welfare initiatives”, says MaaS

Education system in a mess and teachers in a pathetic condition: Dr Chanakya Jha

Dr Chanakya Jha, Dean Research, ISBM Engineering College, Pune, chairman, IEEE)

“The state of Maharashtra makes a maximum contribution to nation’s GDP at 35 per cent. Yet the education system of the state continues to be in a dismal state and its teachers
are in a horrible condition.

How does one imagine the future of such a state whose younger generation is being imparting education which has no merry whatsoever ?

“It seems in last 8 to 9 years, there has been no improvement in the education state of Maharashtra.

Also, it seems those who were elected from the teachers’ constituency and become education ministers or representatives, have taken no pain to improve the state of education.

“If a child is given a wrong education, then entire generation is wrecked.

Considering this, we can say that our current education system is heading nowhere and it is our moral responsibility to speak up against this malaise.”

“Teachers are not responsible for the current mess, but are victims of the system in place. It is disconcerting to note that teachers have to virtually beg before those who run the institutes or the government for their legitimate salaries
There are thousands of teachers who do not get their monthly salaries on time which is highly shocking.

“Maharashtra is a prosperous state. It’s education system should be compared to the one in existence in Finland. The current state of education in Maharashtra is sadly sinking by the day.

“It is worth noting that neither education facilities nor merit has improved over the years. Teachers don’t get salaries on time, pregnant teachers are deprived of the special facilities and concessions meant for them, forget about PF and pensions plans for teachers. MLAs get pensions in five years, teachers don’t get pension even after decades of service. …

Teachers have been found to be working on a salary of Rs 5000 to Rs 7000 which is what a daily laborer draws… The government deserves to be condemned for keeping the education system in such an abysmal state…

“If we leave side secondary and higher secondary colleges, the state of professional colleges is in utter bad shape. The engineering colleges have assumed a criminal look…”

“What is needed is classification of the education system, but instead teachers have been classified. Teachers have been classified in 30 categories which includes fulltime teachers, contractual teachers, aided teachers, unaided teachers, old pension teachers, permanent teachers.. Govt should stop such ridiculous policies…”

“It is time to stop criminalization of education system otherwise this demon will gobble up entire nation. I have made a resolve to give teachers their pride of place for which I expect support from the entire society…”

Here’s the true state of affairs of the education system in Maharashtra.

In 2010, Maharashtra had computers only in 12 per cent schools.
By 2018, it shot up to 64.4 per cent.

Even today, one fourth of the schools do not have computer facilities and we are dreaming of digital India.
Only 35 per cent school have computer teachers.

As a result, only 19 per cent students could use computers.

In 2010, 83.1 per cent and in 2018, 88.4 per cent schools had libraries. In 2010, 62.4 per cent and in 2018, 34 per cent students were taking advantage of the facility.

In 2018, only 74.9 per cent schools had security wall. Even today, 30 per cent schools have drinking water problem.

There are more shocking facts.
In 2018, it was found in a survey of class 5 students that 66 per cent of them could not write Marathi alphabets.

And 31 per cent students could not solve math’s. It raised questions like do we approve of such an education system ? Did Chhatrapati Shivaji dream of such a nation ? Did Veer Savarkar dream of nation ? Answer is no.

Our MLAs and MPs whom we elected and expected them to improve our education system as also other living conditions have let us down in a big way.

We are far far away from setting up a robust system.

It is time we need to join hands to raise our voice against such a dismal education system.

Sound in the movie has to compliment the script- Bishwadeep Chatterjee

‘‘While working on a film, we simulate and recreate the sounds as per the need of the story and blend it in the scenes with dialogues, background score and songs .

The sound effects in the movie have to compliment the script,’’ said the national award winning sound designer Bishwadeep Chatterjee.

He was delivering a lecture in the 18th Pune International Film Festival (PIFF) organized by Pune Film Foundation and Maharashtra Government. Dr. Jabbar Patel, Director, PIFF was present among the dignitaries.

Chatterjee said that, ‘‘Our generation of sound designers experienced working with all the mediums like vacuum tube, analog magnetic platform and digital.

Today, the technical limitations are slowly getting out of the way.

So this is very interesting time for us.’’

He mentioned that in the 80s the VHS tapes came and people started preferring to watch movies at home. It was the Dolby Surround sound that played important role in bringing the audience back to theatres.

Chatterjee gave examples of the movies ‘Bajirao Mastani’, ‘Uri’ and ‘Chintu Ka Birthday’and explained how they created different sound effects.

He said that he had first read the book about Bajirao Peshwa before reading the script of the film.

‘‘To show the home background of Bajirao Peshwa in the movie, I went to the place Wai near Panchgani and recorded the Brahmin worshippers chanting Sanskrit Vedas.

We also used some old Marathi Bhajans. We used the rumbling sounds to show the aftermath of war and deliberately designed sound effects to show Bajirao’s character larger than life.

While designing for the movie ‘Chintu Ka Birthday’, we had to create the war-like environment in Iraq as per the story.

The movie is low budget and shot in closed setting.

So we created create sound effects to make it look like happening in Iraq. ’’

A list of great artists would be incomplete if Dr. Shriram Lagoo’s name is not included: Vikram Gokhale

“Dr. Shriram Lagoo was an asset to Indian theatre and if a list of great artists is prepared without mentioning the name of Dr. Lagoo then it would remain incomplete.

Honoured with the PIFF Distinguished Award at the film festival which is dedicated to Dr. Lagoo was very heart-warming and gratifying,” said national award winner veteran actor, Vikram Gokhale.

He was speaking at a Press conference organized by Pune Film Foundation and Maharashtra Government as a part of the 18th Pune International Film Foundation (PIFF) today at Deccan Rendezvous, Pune in presence of Dr. Jabbar Patel, Director, PIFF.

“Dr. Lagoo besides being famous was also an intelligent actor and I learned a lot from him.

Once while watching me perform on the stage he had told Dr. Shanta Jog that my acting prowess was natural and spontaneous.

I guess that was the biggest compliment I had ever received,” he said.

Speaking on theatre, Gokhale said, “I think theatre is the only place that can develop self-confidence among budding actors.

Theatre is different from films where you can get several takes. Theatre gives you a chance to learn more and more and makes you a good actor,” he added. He also complimented Jabbar Patel for being his positive critic since the early days of his career stating how Patel’s criticism helped him to improve.

Gokhale accordingly also pointed toward the recent controversy involving Vinayak Savarkar.

“I am a fan of Savarkar as I know what he stood for. The people who have been vilifying and belittling Savarkar should read and do some research about him first.

I also ask Congress leaders including Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi what do they know about Savarkar and who has given them right to malign him,” Gokhale said.

He also spoke regarding the recent protest over Citizenship Amendment Act, which he said was unwanted. “I am in support of CAA.

Why should an Indian taxpayer take the burden of illegal immigrants? When it comes to such issues, I am with the PM,” he said.

Since there has been no censorship in the entertainment content shown on OTT platforms, Gokhale said that it was being misused.

“Time has come to think about what steps can be taken to stop this misuse.

But at the same time, it should be done on government level and no unauthorized or unofficial faction should get involved in it,” he said.

The story of the movie is about a housewife who has camera shyness.

Mehul Shah said that the they had always thought of the movie with actor Neena Kulkarni in the central character.

Explaining the plot of the movie he said, ‘‘While attending a funeral, the housewife Maee realizes that in situations like these, people often look for a photo of the deceased.

She decides to overcome her fear for camera to get a good picture that can be put up in her remembrance.’’

Phadke said that, ‘‘As the budget of the movie was low, we cut down many expenses such as use of generator equipment and use of more lights.

To stress the lack of confidence in Maee’s mind to face camera we used some filming ideas like deliberately keeping her off-centre in most of the frames.’’

Movie- Bonsai

Sameer Asha Patil, Director and Gaurav Ponkshe and Sanjay Shankar, Producers

The director, Sameer Asha Patil’s journey has been from a village to big city like Mumbai, which according to him was a significant transition.

2020-01-13-18-23-00.jpg
“This story was born from my own experiences.

It is difficult for a villager who has lived among nature, following rural customs to adjust in a sprawling city, which is made of artificial and technical things.

2020-01-13-18-24-11.jpg

We have created a different kind of bonsai society, which is artificial with our own roots making our lives colorless and dull.

2020-01-13-18-25-31.jpg

I have made the movie black and white and have kept the ending colored as I wanted to convey that when love blooms, the results can still be colorful,” said Patil.

2020-01-13-18-26-49.jpg

The movie is about an old man who has spent his whole life in a small village and later moves to the city at his son’s insistence even though he dislikes the idea.

2020-01-13-18-28-24

When he lands into the city, he finds no connection with the artificiality and complexities of modern life and misses his village but finds solace in his granddaughter.

He decides to flee from the city before the bull festival, but his granddaughter prevents him from doing that.

He finds himself in dilemma of the love towards his village and his granddaughter and tries to adjust to this new life in the city, where he doesn’t belong.

“Cinema can’t change perception of the society, but it can lift one’s thought. We have to understand that if we want a secured future, we have to free our thinking,” said Patil.

Movie- Tujhya Aaila / Up your Mother’s

– Sujay Dahake, Director, Megha Pramanik, Producer

For Sujoy Dahake, it was a random and offbeat incident that triggered him to make this film.
“While directing the movie Shaala, I had abused a co-worker for not performing his duty.

2020-01-13-16-14-22.jpg

We met again after 7 years and when he recalled the incident, I was taken aback and wondered how an insult can carry so much weight.

It was then I decided that I must talk about verbal violence through a film and accordingly the idea to make ‘Tujhya Aaila’ was born,” said Dahake.

2020-01-13-16-53-04.jpg

The film revolves around a 12-year-old urban boy who gets admitted in a rural school after his family moves to a village following his father’s transfer.

2020-01-13-16-39-28.jpg

Unknown to the rural culture, the boy is surprised when he is exposed to the culture of verbal abuse prevalent among his fellow-students.

While he works hard to adapt and blend in, the events around him make him question the very practice of verbal abuse that exists in society.

“The film deals with contrasting ideas, caste, culture and corporal punishment.

It has a layer of violence, but it mainly talks with feminism.

Why does verbal abuses refer only to females and not men and why abusing someone always matter?

The gravity of verbal violence can be dangerous,” Sujoy added.

Movie: A Night A Day
Prathap Joseph T., Director
The film- A Night A Day / Oru Rathri Oru Pakal deals with the subject of ‘honour crimes’ and natural disasters in the state of Kerala.

“I like the cinematic way of looking at things. Kerala had been affected with lots of calamitiesincluding incidents involving honour killings, floods and a drought.

I wanted to connect everything with the hierarchal social minds and make a film.

The title of the film implies something known and something unknown.

We’ve had 5 screenings in Kerala and have received good response from the youth,” said Prathap Joseph T., Director of the film.

The story is about a pair of lovers get into a house that was deserted in flood.

The woman has left her home because the news of the affair led into a conflict at home, while the man is not in a condition to start a life with her.

Slowly they move toward the reeds on the river where the affects of nature and human drives face each other.

Movie- Widow of Silence
Praveen Morchhale, Director, Screenwriter, Producer

“A news report about the conditions of half-widows in Kashmir propelled me to make this film.

I went to Kashmir to interview these women and during an interaction one of them told me that ‘nobody considered them alive’.

So accordingly, I did a research on the subject and formed the stories of these women into one story,” said Praveen Morchhale, Director.

The Urdu-language drama set in conflict-ridden Kashmir, highlights the state of Aasia, a half-widow whose husband is taken by Indian police and is presumed dead.

However, without a death certificate she can neither remarry nor settle her dire financial situation.
A corrupt government clerk offers her the documents she needs, in return for agreement to sell her small plot of land to a buyer of his choosing, plus a commission and sex.

“I wanted to tell a story of distraught families, where the people who suffer the most are woman and children and had no intention of turning it into a political one.

Most of the characters in my film are non-actors who belong to the conflict-zone in Kashmir,” added Morchhale.

Filmmakers feel pressure to be different and original in today’s world- R. Balki

: ‘‘Today we are exposed to a lot of content.

We see more interesting, weird things happening in people’s lives.

There is a lot of pressure on filmmakers to be different and original in such a world,’’ said renowned Director R. Balki.

He was speaking today while delivering the Vijay Tendulkar Memorial Lecture at PVR Icon as a part of 18th

Pune International Film Festival (PIFF) organized by Pune Film Foundation and Maharashtra Government.

Dr. Jabbar Patel, Director, Piff interviewed Balki.

2020-01-13-03-25-11

Balki recalled meeting playwright Vijay Tendulkar in his last days. ‘‘Tendulkar was the bravest writer of our times and he is rather more relevant today.

He was brave not only because he was not afraid to speak his mind, but whenever there was disturbance in the society, he didn’t let that disturb him but used it to be more creative,’’ said Balki.

Balki talked about his advertising career and some of his very well received films like ‘Cheeni Kum’, ‘Paa’ and ‘Padman’. He also mentioned that the true purpose of cinema is to give back to society.

Talking about the audience, Balki said that, ‘‘People talk about which cinema will appeal to B centre, C centre or A centre etc. I think that there is no such thing. There is only one centre and its your head.

When you start formulating things, you are creating something for the people you don’t even know. The content you make should appeal to the normal sensibility.’’

Speaking about the movie ‘Paa’, Balki said,‘‘I thought the idea of the film when I once saw Amitabh Bachchan and Abhishek Bachchan speaking with each other and realized that they were talking in the way very opposite to their personalities.

I thought what would happen if Abhishek plays the role of the father and Amitabh of the son.

We shot this movie without the VFX effects and most of the film was shot from the top angle to make Amitabh Bachchan look like a child.’’

“We decided to make this film after a news of a 14-year-old girl being pregnant in a city in China was reported in the local newspaper.

However, newspapers in China do not have freedom, so whatever news that is printed is considered as true.

Many times, the truth behind a particular story is not revealed,” said Wang Zijian, Producer.
Synopsis:
The movie is about a sexually abused teenager called Ying. Ying’s father discovers her to be pregnant and seeks for justice in vain.

Jia, a journalist from Shenzhen, shows interest in the case and gets lost in trailing into the rebellious girl’s real life.

Zijian said that the story in the film was based on real life characters.

“It was the toughest film that I shot as we had to shoot in extreme cold, which the people in South India have never experience.

The film deals with the people from the lower strata of the society who have no option but look for job elsewhere as the government gives them a cold shoulder.

Despite high literacy rate in Kerala the problem of caste discrimination still exists though not on a very large level, but nevertheless its creeping through certain elements,” said Bijukumar Damodaran, Director.

Synopsis :

The movie is about a Dalit family from Kerala who migrate to a lower Himalaya village in search of better living conditions.

Television programs should be family – oriented- B.P. Singh

“Television programs should be family-oriented and family members from all age groups should be able to sit together and watch the soaps.

Even crime thrillers need to be transformed into watchable series and for that, the writers have to become sensitive and raw and come up with new thoughts.

To become a good story-teller, one has to merge entertainment with reality but in an upright way,” said B.P. Singh, Chairman, FTII and Director of the popular TV series, CID at a press conference organized by Pune Film Foundation as a part of the 18th Pune International Film Foundation (PIFF) today at Deccan Rendezvous, Pune.

Dr. Jabbar Patel, Director, PIFF and the actors of the CID program including Shivaji Satam, Aditya Srivastava and Dayanand Shetty were present at the conference.

“Along with time, the society changes and so does the stories and the films.

For filmmakers, whatever they learn through the camera and it is only through its lenses that you see the reality and life experiences.

Camera becomes a part of life,” B.P. Singh added.

Speaking at the conference, Shivaji Satam said, “Working with experience people pays and makes your job easy. Every actor has their own style and character whether they are on stage or in films while facing the camera.”

Aditya Srivastava said, “The late theatre director and actor, Habib Tanvir used to tell me that ‘acting is a journey and not a destination.’ It does not matter whether you are a good or a bad actor, what matters is how much you offer.”

“The film deals with the insurgency that rocked Assam during the 80’s and 90’s. There were lots of tragedies that took place with families destroyed or dislocated including mine and even after 20 years the ordeal is yet to see the end. Since the women in Assam were the ones who were most affected, I was able to address their problem through this movie,” said Rajni Basumatary, Director and Actor.

The Seed is a Bodo-language Indian film which reflects the insurgency problem, excesses of security forces, insecurity among the rural masses who were tortured or killed in Assam.

“Some of the characters in the film are the victims themselves who gave a natural and powerful performance even though it was painful for them to relive the moments,” said Basumatary.
