Education system in a mess and teachers in a pathetic condition: Dr Chanakya Jha
Dr Chanakya Jha, Dean Research, ISBM Engineering College, Pune, chairman, IEEE)
“The state of Maharashtra makes a maximum contribution to nation’s GDP at 35 per cent. Yet the education system of the state continues to be in a dismal state and its teachers
are in a horrible condition.
How does one imagine the future of such a state whose younger generation is being imparting education which has no merry whatsoever ?
“It seems in last 8 to 9 years, there has been no improvement in the education state of Maharashtra.
Also, it seems those who were elected from the teachers’ constituency and become education ministers or representatives, have taken no pain to improve the state of education.
“If a child is given a wrong education, then entire generation is wrecked.
Considering this, we can say that our current education system is heading nowhere and it is our moral responsibility to speak up against this malaise.”
“Teachers are not responsible for the current mess, but are victims of the system in place. It is disconcerting to note that teachers have to virtually beg before those who run the institutes or the government for their legitimate salaries
There are thousands of teachers who do not get their monthly salaries on time which is highly shocking.
“Maharashtra is a prosperous state. It’s education system should be compared to the one in existence in Finland. The current state of education in Maharashtra is sadly sinking by the day.
“It is worth noting that neither education facilities nor merit has improved over the years. Teachers don’t get salaries on time, pregnant teachers are deprived of the special facilities and concessions meant for them, forget about PF and pensions plans for teachers. MLAs get pensions in five years, teachers don’t get pension even after decades of service. …
Teachers have been found to be working on a salary of Rs 5000 to Rs 7000 which is what a daily laborer draws… The government deserves to be condemned for keeping the education system in such an abysmal state…
“If we leave side secondary and higher secondary colleges, the state of professional colleges is in utter bad shape. The engineering colleges have assumed a criminal look…”
“What is needed is classification of the education system, but instead teachers have been classified. Teachers have been classified in 30 categories which includes fulltime teachers, contractual teachers, aided teachers, unaided teachers, old pension teachers, permanent teachers.. Govt should stop such ridiculous policies…”
“It is time to stop criminalization of education system otherwise this demon will gobble up entire nation. I have made a resolve to give teachers their pride of place for which I expect support from the entire society…”
Here’s the true state of affairs of the education system in Maharashtra.
In 2010, Maharashtra had computers only in 12 per cent schools.
By 2018, it shot up to 64.4 per cent.
Even today, one fourth of the schools do not have computer facilities and we are dreaming of digital India.
Only 35 per cent school have computer teachers.
As a result, only 19 per cent students could use computers.
In 2010, 83.1 per cent and in 2018, 88.4 per cent schools had libraries. In 2010, 62.4 per cent and in 2018, 34 per cent students were taking advantage of the facility.
In 2018, only 74.9 per cent schools had security wall. Even today, 30 per cent schools have drinking water problem.
There are more shocking facts.
In 2018, it was found in a survey of class 5 students that 66 per cent of them could not write Marathi alphabets.
And 31 per cent students could not solve math’s. It raised questions like do we approve of such an education system ? Did Chhatrapati Shivaji dream of such a nation ? Did Veer Savarkar dream of nation ? Answer is no.
Our MLAs and MPs whom we elected and expected them to improve our education system as also other living conditions have let us down in a big way.
We are far far away from setting up a robust system.
It is time we need to join hands to raise our voice against such a dismal education system.

Sound in the movie has to compliment the script- Bishwadeep Chatterjee
‘‘While working on a film, we simulate and recreate the sounds as per the need of the story and blend it in the scenes with dialogues, background score and songs .
The sound effects in the movie have to compliment the script,’’ said the national award winning sound designer Bishwadeep Chatterjee.
He was delivering a lecture in the 18th Pune International Film Festival (PIFF) organized by Pune Film Foundation and Maharashtra Government. Dr. Jabbar Patel, Director, PIFF was present among the dignitaries.
Chatterjee said that, ‘‘Our generation of sound designers experienced working with all the mediums like vacuum tube, analog magnetic platform and digital.
Today, the technical limitations are slowly getting out of the way.
So this is very interesting time for us.’’
He mentioned that in the 80s the VHS tapes came and people started preferring to watch movies at home. It was the Dolby Surround sound that played important role in bringing the audience back to theatres.
Chatterjee gave examples of the movies ‘Bajirao Mastani’, ‘Uri’ and ‘Chintu Ka Birthday’and explained how they created different sound effects.
He said that he had first read the book about Bajirao Peshwa before reading the script of the film.
‘‘To show the home background of Bajirao Peshwa in the movie, I went to the place Wai near Panchgani and recorded the Brahmin worshippers chanting Sanskrit Vedas.
We also used some old Marathi Bhajans. We used the rumbling sounds to show the aftermath of war and deliberately designed sound effects to show Bajirao’s character larger than life.
While designing for the movie ‘Chintu Ka Birthday’, we had to create the war-like environment in Iraq as per the story.
The movie is low budget and shot in closed setting.
So we created create sound effects to make it look like happening in Iraq. ’’
A list of great artists would be incomplete if Dr. Shriram Lagoo’s name is not included: Vikram Gokhale
“Dr. Shriram Lagoo was an asset to Indian theatre and if a list of great artists is prepared without mentioning the name of Dr. Lagoo then it would remain incomplete.
Honoured with the PIFF Distinguished Award at the film festival which is dedicated to Dr. Lagoo was very heart-warming and gratifying,” said national award winner veteran actor, Vikram Gokhale.
He was speaking at a Press conference organized by Pune Film Foundation and Maharashtra Government as a part of the 18th Pune International Film Foundation (PIFF) today at Deccan Rendezvous, Pune in presence of Dr. Jabbar Patel, Director, PIFF.
“Dr. Lagoo besides being famous was also an intelligent actor and I learned a lot from him.
Once while watching me perform on the stage he had told Dr. Shanta Jog that my acting prowess was natural and spontaneous.
I guess that was the biggest compliment I had ever received,” he said.
Speaking on theatre, Gokhale said, “I think theatre is the only place that can develop self-confidence among budding actors.
Theatre is different from films where you can get several takes. Theatre gives you a chance to learn more and more and makes you a good actor,” he added. He also complimented Jabbar Patel for being his positive critic since the early days of his career stating how Patel’s criticism helped him to improve.
Gokhale accordingly also pointed toward the recent controversy involving Vinayak Savarkar.
“I am a fan of Savarkar as I know what he stood for. The people who have been vilifying and belittling Savarkar should read and do some research about him first.
I also ask Congress leaders including Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi what do they know about Savarkar and who has given them right to malign him,” Gokhale said.
He also spoke regarding the recent protest over Citizenship Amendment Act, which he said was unwanted. “I am in support of CAA.
Why should an Indian taxpayer take the burden of illegal immigrants? When it comes to such issues, I am with the PM,” he said.
Since there has been no censorship in the entertainment content shown on OTT platforms, Gokhale said that it was being misused.
“Time has come to think about what steps can be taken to stop this misuse.
But at the same time, it should be done on government level and no unauthorized or unofficial faction should get involved in it,” he said.

The story of the movie is about a housewife who has camera shyness.
Mehul Shah said that the they had always thought of the movie with actor Neena Kulkarni in the central character.
Explaining the plot of the movie he said, ‘‘While attending a funeral, the housewife Maee realizes that in situations like these, people often look for a photo of the deceased.
She decides to overcome her fear for camera to get a good picture that can be put up in her remembrance.’’
Phadke said that, ‘‘As the budget of the movie was low, we cut down many expenses such as use of generator equipment and use of more lights.
To stress the lack of confidence in Maee’s mind to face camera we used some filming ideas like deliberately keeping her off-centre in most of the frames.’’

The film Y highlights the bane of female feticide plaguing the society. Connecting four different storylines, this is a film about social issues that includes a couple who decides to do something barbaric in the 9th month of their pregnancy.
A husband who cons his wife.
A medical professional who shuns his ethics and a woman who solely fights against all evils, mentalities and the system and eventually turns into a torchbearer.
“The hospital is the focal point of the film that goes through many levels.
In one of the stories, we have highlighted demand for female feticide, and in the other we talk about an organization that seeks to stop this evil.
Though the stories are fictional, they numb you at one level and coerce you to think,” said Dr. Ajit Wadikar, Director.
“Even though such films are often limited to the festivals, the concept re-emerges and reaches out to the community and inspires the audience,” said Actor, Nandu Madhav.

Meet the Press
– Sameer Asha Patil, Director and Gaurav Ponkshe and Sanjay Shankar, Producers
The director, Sameer Asha Patil’s journey has been from a village to big city like Mumbai, which according to him was a significant transition.
“This story was born from my own experiences.
It is difficult for a villager who has lived among nature, following rural customs to adjust in a sprawling city, which is made of artificial and technical things.
We have created a different kind of bonsai society, which is artificial with our own roots making our lives colorless and dull.
I have made the movie black and white and have kept the ending colored as I wanted to convey that when love blooms, the results can still be colorful,” said Patil.
The movie is about an old man who has spent his whole life in a small village and later moves to the city at his son’s insistence even though he dislikes the idea.
When he lands into the city, he finds no connection with the artificiality and complexities of modern life and misses his village but finds solace in his granddaughter.
He decides to flee from the city before the bull festival, but his granddaughter prevents him from doing that.
He finds himself in dilemma of the love towards his village and his granddaughter and tries to adjust to this new life in the city, where he doesn’t belong.
“Cinema can’t change perception of the society, but it can lift one’s thought. We have to understand that if we want a secured future, we have to free our thinking,” said Patil.
Movie- Tujhya Aaila / Up your Mother’s
– Sujay Dahake, Director, Megha Pramanik, Producer
For Sujoy Dahake, it was a random and offbeat incident that triggered him to make this film.
“While directing the movie Shaala, I had abused a co-worker for not performing his duty.
We met again after 7 years and when he recalled the incident, I was taken aback and wondered how an insult can carry so much weight.
It was then I decided that I must talk about verbal violence through a film and accordingly the idea to make ‘Tujhya Aaila’ was born,” said Dahake.
The film revolves around a 12-year-old urban boy who gets admitted in a rural school after his family moves to a village following his father’s transfer.
Unknown to the rural culture, the boy is surprised when he is exposed to the culture of verbal abuse prevalent among his fellow-students.
While he works hard to adapt and blend in, the events around him make him question the very practice of verbal abuse that exists in society.
“The film deals with contrasting ideas, caste, culture and corporal punishment.
It has a layer of violence, but it mainly talks with feminism.
Why does verbal abuses refer only to females and not men and why abusing someone always matter?
The gravity of verbal violence can be dangerous,” Sujoy added.

Movie: A Night A Day
Prathap Joseph T., Director
The film- A Night A Day / Oru Rathri Oru Pakal deals with the subject of ‘honour crimes’ and natural disasters in the state of Kerala.
“I like the cinematic way of looking at things. Kerala had been affected with lots of calamitiesincluding incidents involving honour killings, floods and a drought.
I wanted to connect everything with the hierarchal social minds and make a film.
The title of the film implies something known and something unknown.
We’ve had 5 screenings in Kerala and have received good response from the youth,” said Prathap Joseph T., Director of the film.
The story is about a pair of lovers get into a house that was deserted in flood.
The woman has left her home because the news of the affair led into a conflict at home, while the man is not in a condition to start a life with her.
Slowly they move toward the reeds on the river where the affects of nature and human drives face each other.

Movie- Widow of Silence
Praveen Morchhale, Director, Screenwriter, Producer
“A news report about the conditions of half-widows in Kashmir propelled me to make this film.
I went to Kashmir to interview these women and during an interaction one of them told me that ‘nobody considered them alive’.
So accordingly, I did a research on the subject and formed the stories of these women into one story,” said Praveen Morchhale, Director.
The Urdu-language drama set in conflict-ridden Kashmir, highlights the state of Aasia, a half-widow whose husband is taken by Indian police and is presumed dead.
However, without a death certificate she can neither remarry nor settle her dire financial situation.
A corrupt government clerk offers her the documents she needs, in return for agreement to sell her small plot of land to a buyer of his choosing, plus a commission and sex.
“I wanted to tell a story of distraught families, where the people who suffer the most are woman and children and had no intention of turning it into a political one.
Most of the characters in my film are non-actors who belong to the conflict-zone in Kashmir,” added Morchhale.

Filmmakers feel pressure to be different and original in today’s world- R. Balki
: ‘‘Today we are exposed to a lot of content.
We see more interesting, weird things happening in people’s lives.
There is a lot of pressure on filmmakers to be different and original in such a world,’’ said renowned Director R. Balki.
He was speaking today while delivering the Vijay Tendulkar Memorial Lecture at PVR Icon as a part of 18th
Pune International Film Festival (PIFF) organized by Pune Film Foundation and Maharashtra Government.
Dr. Jabbar Patel, Director, Piff interviewed Balki.
Balki recalled meeting playwright Vijay Tendulkar in his last days. ‘‘Tendulkar was the bravest writer of our times and he is rather more relevant today.
He was brave not only because he was not afraid to speak his mind, but whenever there was disturbance in the society, he didn’t let that disturb him but used it to be more creative,’’ said Balki.
Balki talked about his advertising career and some of his very well received films like ‘Cheeni Kum’, ‘Paa’ and ‘Padman’. He also mentioned that the true purpose of cinema is to give back to society.
Talking about the audience, Balki said that, ‘‘People talk about which cinema will appeal to B centre, C centre or A centre etc. I think that there is no such thing. There is only one centre and its your head.
When you start formulating things, you are creating something for the people you don’t even know. The content you make should appeal to the normal sensibility.’’
Speaking about the movie ‘Paa’, Balki said,‘‘I thought the idea of the film when I once saw Amitabh Bachchan and Abhishek Bachchan speaking with each other and realized that they were talking in the way very opposite to their personalities.
I thought what would happen if Abhishek plays the role of the father and Amitabh of the son.
We shot this movie without the VFX effects and most of the film was shot from the top angle to make Amitabh Bachchan look like a child.’’

Wang Zijian, Producer
“We decided to make this film after a news of a 14-year-old girl being pregnant in a city in China was reported in the local newspaper.

Many times, the truth behind a particular story is not revealed,” said Wang Zijian, Producer.
The movie is about a sexually abused teenager called Ying. Ying’s father discovers her to be pregnant and seeks for justice in vain.
Jia, a journalist from Shenzhen, shows interest in the case and gets lost in trailing into the rebellious girl’s real life.
Zijian said that the story in the film was based on real life characters.
“It is a critical issue and we want to broadcast it so it could reach out to people.
However, we are yet to receive permission to show the film from the police and government in China.”

Tall Tales’ is the first feature film of director, Attila Szasz, which deals with a thrilling story of a con man who tries to find an opportunity during the World War II.
The man flees to Budapest, where he is given shelter by a woman and her son.

Movie- Tree Under the Sun
Bijukumar Damodaran, Director
“It was the toughest film that I shot as we had to shoot in extreme cold, which the people in South India have never experience.
The film deals with the people from the lower strata of the society who have no option but look for job elsewhere as the government gives them a cold shoulder.
Despite high literacy rate in Kerala the problem of caste discrimination still exists though not on a very large level, but nevertheless its creeping through certain elements,” said Bijukumar Damodaran, Director.
The movie is about a Dalit family from Kerala who migrate to a lower Himalaya village in search of better living conditions.
It shows how the socially backward community in India grapples with caste discrimination in their daily life.

Television programs should be family – oriented- B.P. Singh
“Television programs should be family-oriented and family members from all age groups should be able to sit together and watch the soaps.
Even crime thrillers need to be transformed into watchable series and for that, the writers have to become sensitive and raw and come up with new thoughts.
To become a good story-teller, one has to merge entertainment with reality but in an upright way,” said B.P. Singh, Chairman, FTII and Director of the popular TV series, CID at a press conference organized by Pune Film Foundation as a part of the 18th Pune International Film Foundation (PIFF) today at Deccan Rendezvous, Pune.
Dr. Jabbar Patel, Director, PIFF and the actors of the CID program including Shivaji Satam, Aditya Srivastava and Dayanand Shetty were present at the conference.
“Along with time, the society changes and so does the stories and the films.
For filmmakers, whatever they learn through the camera and it is only through its lenses that you see the reality and life experiences.
Camera becomes a part of life,” B.P. Singh added.
Speaking at the conference, Shivaji Satam said, “Working with experience people pays and makes your job easy. Every actor has their own style and character whether they are on stage or in films while facing the camera.”
Aditya Srivastava said, “The late theatre director and actor, Habib Tanvir used to tell me that ‘acting is a journey and not a destination.’ It does not matter whether you are a good or a bad actor, what matters is how much you offer.”
Dayanand Shetty said, “I come from a non-acting background and it was my destiny which got me here. CID series influenced our lives in many ways.”

“The film deals with the insurgency that rocked Assam during the 80’s and 90’s. There were lots of tragedies that took place with families destroyed or dislocated including mine and even after 20 years the ordeal is yet to see the end. Since the women in Assam were the ones who were most affected, I was able to address their problem through this movie,” said Rajni Basumatary, Director and Actor.
The Seed is a Bodo-language Indian film which reflects the insurgency problem, excesses of security forces, insecurity among the rural masses who were tortured or killed in Assam.
“Some of the characters in the film are the victims themselves who gave a natural and powerful performance even though it was painful for them to relive the moments,” said Basumatary.
